Propane solenoid gets hot
I just noticed tonight that the solenoid on my propane system was hot to the touch. Never checked or noticed but is this normal? It wasn't scalding hot but I don't think I could keep my hand on it for long. Oven had been baking for some time.

What it is, is an electro-magnet with a plunger inside. It's bound to get a little warm if held open for a long time. But as long as it doesn't get hot enough to melt the insulation on the wires is should be fine.
If it gets too hot it'll fail and close, not allowing any gas to pass. Is it fused with the recommended fuse?
What brand name is it?

Yup. They get too hot to hold. They are built to take it. If it can sizzle a splash of water it is too hot.

I don't think it would sizzle water just pretty hot. I think it said something like goyon on it maybe? Will take another look today.

Take it apart and clean it - salt air does a number on them.

It's normal for them to get hot. For example, the Trident solenoid draws nearly 10W that needs to be dissipated as heat over a relatively small surface area. Compare it to a small light bulb.

Is 10W normal for most propane solenoids? I recently noticed that mine draws about 10-12W (.9 amps on a 12VDC system). I could have sworn that it used to draw much less, but maybe my memory is faulty.

Mine was getting too hot to touch, so I took it apart and cleaned it with WD 40
Now it doesnt get hot - like I said, salt air does a number on them!

It probably is, but not all coils are 12Volt.
