Question Propane leak detector/alarm

There are many brands and devices on market.
Does anybody have experience with that and can recommend something?

Re: Propane leak detector/alarm

We use the Xintex S-2A by Fireboy. We've never had a propane leak to see if it actually works but I've tested it by spraying a small amount of butane from the canister that charges my portable soldering iron and it did sound off the alarm and shut off the solenoid.

For a while, we had a problem that whenever I would key the microphone on the SSB, the propane sniffer would alarm and shut down (it would make whoever was cooking very angry). I've since fixed that.

Fair winds and calm seas.

Re: Propane leak detector/alarm

I use a combo unite for propane and CO2, for marine use.

Dual Propane/LP & Carbon Monoxide Alarms

+1 for the S-2A. I've tested it several times with an un-lit propane torch. Works every time.

We have the Xintrex S-1A, and are happy with it. Just be aware, the sensor needs to be heated and this can take 300mA at start, then tapers off to 150mA.

We have one of these, 8mm Alde Marine/Boat Gas Leak Detector | Bubble Tester

Also available in 10mm

Works very well and tells you if you have a gas leak, but it does not tell you where the leak is, that's when the fun starts!!

I have this: ELECTRO SYSTEMS #GS/6, GAS & PROPANE DETECTOR/CONTROLLER. The Chandlery Online

as I had both propane and a gasoline Atomic 4 aboard. Worked well in test situations and is still in place.

Re: Propane leak detector/alarm

Hi,

I have the Electro Systems GS/6. Unfortunately this unit was put together very poorly at the factory and did not work when it was received.
Electro Systems was Awful to deal with. I sent them clear pictures of the poor workmanship (two bad solder joints). They claimed this could only have been caused by manhandling because everything is tested before it leaves the factory. They said if I shipped the unit back to them (at my own cost) they would evaluate whether or not I should get a replacement. They call this a "no-hassle" warranty.
Anyhow, I bought a soldering iron and fixed it myself. When it's working it's fine, but I would never buy anything from them again.

Re: Propane leak detector/alarm

We have used the Xintrex system over the years and found it very problematic. We had many false alarms and found that eventually we had to replace the sensor about once every year to year and a half. Once the sensor starts to fail, it gives false alarms and your propane to the stove is cut off completely even though there are no leaks. We had to make sure we always had a spare sensor until we replaced it with another unit. The sensors aren't cheap. We have spoken to other full time cruisers that had the same problem. In addition, many of our cleaning products would set it off, it was under the galley cabinet near the stove. Chuck
