Re: Pleasure Boat Refrigeration Technical Services from Hell

Just had a quick look at the Table of Contents and it seems all encompassing.
There is a Chapter for everything plus, plus!!
I wonder if there will be an eBook version Kindle etc which would be very convenient?

One test would be to disconnect fan black ground wire from module to see if compressor will then run.
And connect the two thermostat wires to gather again to see if compressor is running.
The Danfoss control module tells fan and or compressor when to run. Because some BD compressors are so quite when running best way to confirm it is running is if get warm in 20 minutes its running.

If compressor is not running there is an electrical problem unless someone has recently added refrigerant.
If compressor runs and there is little or no cooling there is a refrigerant problem, lack of or refrigeration flow restriction.
thanks Richard
I will investigate tommorow

Re: Pleasure Boat Refrigeration Technical Services from Hell

This thread reminds me how helpful Mr. Kollman has been to me! It also reminds me that my control module on an old Danfoss is dead and I'll have to contact him again in a month or so when I'm back aboard to get a new one and get things running again.

Since he has written two books. Does anyone have a suggestion for which is most useful for the owner of an older unit? Probably about 25 yr old.

Thanks again!! Bill

I think this one would be your best choice for an older unit:
Kollmann Marine

When we hire techs that assist in building our systems here in San Diego, we give them a copy of each of the books as assigned reading along with our Company Employee Handbook. I don't care if they read the lawyer driven Employee Handbook....but I pay them to read Richard's Books before any equipment build training begins.

Unfortunately, that's true in almost every industry these days. Customer service seems to be an almost completely lost art. Which is sad, since, when you get right down to it, it really isn't all that complicated.

Re: Pleasure Boat Refrigeration Technical Services from Hell

In my first twenty years of writing five DIY books on boat refrigeration I could keep up with current changes in pleasure boat refrigeration. In the mid 1990s pleasure boat 12 volt refrigeration became popular do to advances in batteries and charging sources like wind, solar, water and high output alternators with smart voltage regulator. At the same time small 12 volt refrigeration became corrupted or debased by adding new elements such as water cooling and unnecessary electronic. Today it is not possible to cover each job shop assembled designs in a single book and company produced manuals do not describe particular problems with there designs.

When I realized I could no longer keep up with all boat refrigeration changes I opened in the year 2000 a web site to supply a method of revision services for each of my books. My boat revision Q and A forum through a word search can help guide anyone to thousands of boat refrigeration problems and solutions.

I still live up to my promise I made 30 years ago if you need an answer to a boat refrigeration question not fond in my book mail it to me or better yet post it on my Boat Refrigeration Forum.
