Re: Pex to Hot Water Heater

Here's a few pics. The Tee fitting is the water supply for my washer/Dryer.

Re: Pex to Hot Water Heater

I pulled out the hot water heater because the support had rotted away after 27 years. Took the heater outside and poured it out...I cannot believe the amount of dirt/gunk/scale that came out of the heater!

Re: Pex to Hot Water Heater

PEX leaches toxins (MTBE and TBA) and is involved in several law suits. Small levels of chlorine such as in municipal water supplies causes the piping to oxidize and eventually fail. When used with brass pipe fittings causes dezincification meaning zinc in the brass leaches out forming a powdery buildup and can block fittings.
Maybe copper or CPVC would be better.

I appreciate the feedback but copper pipe has no place on my boat. CPVC may be useful in the bilge or for black water but not for my drinking water.

2. Lead free versions of PEX is available. In any case, new legal standards were set back in 2014. Heck, its legal in California, where farting is illegal.

See:

Lead Free Standards - An Overview of the Issue - Watts - Plumbing, Heating and Water Quality Products Manufacturer

3. The Chlorine issue is due to percentages greater than 3%. They solved this issue by adding antioxidants to the tubing, which are supposed to last 50 years I think. Besides we are adding a water maker later in the year so we won't be using Chlorinated water for much of our water supply. What is left will come from a muni supply that falls under regulated percentages.

4. We are not using brass fittings.

In any case, the failure rate is very low. The newer PEX is far better.
