Other Uses for Watermakers

I am currently setting up my RO DIY desalination unit, almost ready to go.

However over the weekend I tried my alternative watermaker, a Still.

Two litres of gasoline (using a Kipor 2kva ) produced 2 litres of fresh water from salt water.

So I tried it again with a sugar and yeast mixture with fresh water, aged for 5 days and produced 2 litres of 40 % vodka alcohol from 2 litres of gasoline.( fuel for the Kipor?)

Works for me.
I suppose i will have to use coconut milk etc as a mixer but hey thats better than just drinking ordinary fresh Water.

And it isn't a still, it is my alternative watermaker.

You better let some other cruisers taste it first.... (not me!)

I stand corrected...as usual when I argue with you..when will I learn..Oh exalted one....

How to make vodka at home

I guess the fist and last bit of the distillation condensate is the dangerous methanol part ...chuck it.

Any hoo...it seems like you are making something way simpler ( skipping steps) then what is described in my link so heed Marks advice....maybe what you have is more gas for your kipor.....can you say Perpetual Motion..LOL 2 in 2 out..

It not perputual motion, since the sugar counts as energy into the system, and gas packs more whollup (technical term) that alchohol.

Great thread. I wonder if it's safe, maybe have it analysed?

Brad

Having made many many hundred of gallons of ethanol I can recommend this page. THE BLUE FLAME > ALCOHOL > FEATURES > EXPATS.org.uk

Take note of the safety concerns raised in section 7. Uncondensed alcohol vapor is nearly as explosive as spilt gasoline.

Methanol (wood alcohol), is an optic nerve poison, which can be present in small amounts when fermenting grains or fruits high in pectin. This methanol comes off first from the still, so it should be segregated and discarded. A simple rule of thumb for this, is to throw away the first 50 mL (reflux still) you collect (per 20 L mash used), or 100-200 mL from a pot still.

Check your still with water-only the first time you use it, to make sure your condenser is up to the job. You don’t want vapour coming out of the collection tube.

There is no safe way of denaturing methylated spirits.

The other impurities, which form the tails (known as cogeners or fusel oils) are quite a complex collection, but mostly just smell/taste bad rather than being actually unsafe.

The fusel oils are a large part of what gives you a headache the following morning

Ditto GordMay. Distillation is a complex process, be sure you read up before trying at home. Another is be sure ALL parts are free of toxic metals. And vapors, (explosive), are completely condensed and well ventlated. It would be within doability to make a solar powered still for watermaking., (or the other use).

Ah Yes of course!....so this is why I failed chemistry class and here I thought it was for selling moon shine on campus all these years....but instead just a simple Theseus miscalculation...

There is a way for a water maker on a boat to safely make not only booze and beer but brand name hooch as well.

I would never promote this type of activity but there is an electric water still made in Canada that can be used to make hooch where such things are legal. Apparently it is the UK's top seller. Here in Canada it is illegal to use it for the purpose of hooch making but there you have it. Saved by the lawmakers:
Home distilling - distilled drinking water
