Just ordered a spare Seagull IV filter. We are liveaboard and put a new filter in a year ago. Water still tastes great, we are quite happy. We use a charcoal filter when we fill our water tank. I'll change the filter when I notice off flavors and try drying out the old filter.

Cheers, RickG
We replace the filter element when flow is reduced too much. The water coming out still tastes perfect when that happens so I guess the carbon is still present.

We also used knock-off filters that were cheaper. They needed replacing 3 times as often so we're back to original

This is what I planned to put on the boat this spring. 3M Aqua Pure, NSF 53 rated for 99.99% cyst removal.

These are much cheaper and use a standard housing... its what we use as a first stage whole-boat filter.

The only filter we have is the course s/s screen before the pump.
Are we going to die?

3000 litre water tanks filled from taps and rain.
Full time liveaboard and been drinking from them for two years now.
Inside of tanks are clean, water has no floaters.

Yes you risk death :-o Even rain water can carry diseases like when it comes from a tropical wave carrying Sahara sand and bacteria, virusses etc. Tap water is very high risk in a large part of the world. Even in the USA people got very sick from drinking tap water.

Maybe we're just resilient.

Never been a super clean freak
Ate dirt as a kid
Drank water from creeks when camping
Drank water from taps in many parts of Vietnam, Thailand , Malaysia and Indonesia.

Saying that, some sort of filter is something we want, but one we can easily get filters for anywhere.
Some are near impossible to get in Asia apparently.

Similar experience with cheap filters so I went back to the expensive ones and used to soak the out-of-service one in caustic soda solution and rinse it out well before swapping them. Since I was filtering for taste enhancement purposes and it appeared to work I assumed I was not indulging in risky behaviour.

I have been having stomach issues for a while now, getting a scope down the gullet Tuesday. One of the questions my gastro doc asked me was if I ever drank unfiltered water when I was stationed in Korea. Some of those little bugs do not care what your constitution is or where you have been.

I am also considering a Pentek but a slightly different housing, the filters have two o-ring gaskets to help prevent bypass.

Re: NEED ADVICE! How to extend the life of the Seagull IV water purification filters?

First link for filters is .05 micron the second link is for .5 micron and the last link is for a 1 micron. Huge differences. I have been searching for a .05 Micron that fits a standard housing for a long time. They used to be standard and Home Depot and take out 99.9% of lead, cysts, pesticides Etc. But no longer. I like the idea of being silver impregnated because it's supposed to stop bacterial growth. But the way I use my filter is to let water run through it at the faucet at the dock and flush the filter out and then fill up jugs for drinking.

We have a seagull IV. My solution to preserve filter is to have it go only to a dedicated spigot. Why does my shower and toilet flush water need to be purified and waste filter life?

You have the freshwater system plumbed to your toilet?

I would be concerned with the toilet contaminating your fresh water unless you use a dedicated supply tank.
