Lewmar Opening Portlights won't hold.

Good day.

My boat is fitted with stock standard Lewmar opening portlights. My problem is that l have a couple that now no longer can support their opened window weight and flop down to a half open position.

Is there a remedy to this problem to get them to stay open ?

I suspicion my problem is the weight of the hatch covers I keep on them, but to keep them from slamming shut in the middle of the night and scaring us, I cut short pieces of 3/4 PVC pipe and use them as props.
Cut several of different lengths.

In other words near as I can tell there is no friction adjustment.
There are I believe commercially available hatch hold open struts if PVC is too Ghetto for you.

Sorry too early in the morning, I see you said port lights, I assumed hatches.

All the same, thanks for your prompt reply.

These are my coachroof opening windows and l somehow remember a trick that gives the hinge a second life so to speak.

Lewmar Opening Portlights won't hold.

Hatchmasters (aka Select Plastics) sells hinge rebuild kits for some models of older Lewmar hatches. The kits supply the parts for the compression/detent function of the hinge that hold the hatch open and fail when they get worn.

I think the OP is looking for a solution for his portlights, not hatches.

Allen...we have old Lewmar o/h hatches too, and after buying/installing rebuild kits for a few years (they are a bugger install!) we finally gave up. We bought 10" hatch springs and a plexiglass drill, bolted them to the underside of the hatch and then screwed them to the opening sidewall. Now there is only 1 open position.....but they open/close easily, and never slam shut in the middle of the night. We're now in our 3rd year of the mod, and it still works good!

Re: Lewmar Opening Portlights won't hold.

Allan,
I empathise with you. I recently removed one of my Port lights only to find that three of the four “springs” in the hinges were broken. I tried numerous places to get replacements but could not find any. In the end I 3D printed some in ABS that worked well.. it was the only economical solution I could find. I can send the STL file if you want.

Regards

We have the oval shaped Lewmar portlights and one of ours was doing the same. It's easily fixed.

If you look at the hinges end on you'll see a socket head screw. Just tighten a little and the friction is restored. Job done, quicker than writing this reply!

Use chain to keep mine open. One end attached to the port window and the other end to the frame. Works great

Re: Lewmar Opening Portlights won't hold.

Many thanks to everyone for your advice and comments.

My portlights have a " spline " on the opening half of the hinge with what seems like a plastic strip on the fixed half that clicks into the groove of the spline.

I would imagine the edges have rounded with use and no longer provide a positive lock.

Re: Lewmar Opening Portlights won't hold.

If you google "how to identify Lewmar portlights" you will see a link to that part of Lewmar's website. Perhaps identifying them will help find the parts you need.
