IN theory...

In theory, yes.

In practice the pump (LAVAC supplied with bowl, not a Henderson or Whale) has had more than a little use so the valves are marginal. With the difficulty of pumping against the vacuum and against the (about 3') head only a small amount is pumped with each stroke.

With the small amount pumped each "squirt" of fresh mixes with sewerage in the long up pipe so it never really holds clean water.

Yes, I can clear the bowl by pumping, waiting, pumping with the lid up, then pumping again with the lid down but this is tedious.

My point is that when doing the original installation a shallow wide holding tank with the bottom just above the waterline may give the best result.

Eventually I will change the pump. I welcome any suggestions on how to make it work better.

Dont replace the pump just get a valve kit and overhaul it. The "lavac" pump is a MK5 Henderson with a slightly different valve set up.
