Just know I believe anybody's AC watermaker will also mean a generator, or perhaps a BIG alternator and a good sized inverter will be required to run it, Solar alone will probably not be enough.
From a power consumption point of view, they are very inefficient by comparison but there are other advantages to them.

I want to keep my boat as simple as possible and an A/C watermaker is not part of that plan. Like a64pilot says, it means adding a diesel generator or alternator and that's just not really needed in my case. I have enough power to run a 12V watermaker and it is such a simple system.

There are 2 options as far as type of watermaker is concerned.

One, those with a generator use an AC watermaker that has a high output.

Two, those without a gen use a DC watermaker that is efficient. Spectra is the most efficient making 6 gallons /hour for 9 amps DC consumption. (Ventura 150)

I went with a 40E because it seemed very efficient. The negative for us was since it produced so little water, you had to run it a lot longer. This resulted in our running it while at anchor in "clean" harbors in the BVI, and we blew out the membrane. Folks who were making a lot more water per hour, could top off the tanks as they sailed to Anegada or made runs between the islands. I found water easy to get, so we never replaced the water maker, but if I was to do it again, i would go for a high output unit as this would make it easy to make all the water you need when you are "at sea".

Yeah, I guess that would help.

The vendors booth will be back where it's always been at Bayside next to the docks.

A hint for those coming to the Strictly Sail show in Miami. Come at least 45 minutes before the show opens and park right in the Bayside multi level parking lot. It fills fast when the show starts and you could be forced to park a few blocks away and pay double to triple the parking rate.

Well not to be left out, if you arrive two weeks later give me a shout if you want to discuss watermakers. My shop is in Fort Lauderdale (behind Lesters Diner for those in the know) and I might still have a few of the demonstration units still there for you to look at. Just give me a shout.

I would have gone with a spectra if we didn't have a 35e already on the boat when we bought her. Long term maintance costs will makeup for the additional upfront costs. IMO

I have a 160E that got flooded with salt water and seized up the motor. would the 80E fit straight into the existing plumbing that I have for the old 160E?

The two of us use 7 gallons per day for drinking, cooking, washing dishes, and showers. I used the 80E for years, and it put out 3.5-4 gallons/hr at 8 amps. However, since Katadyn bought it from PUR the pricing has gone way up, and their parts pricing makes Volvo look cheap. I wouldn't buy another one.

Bigger is better in 12v watermakers because when you have excess power (sunny/windy days/ motoring), you can put more water in your tanks during that time

About 6 years ago we put on an E80 and then headed to the Western Caribbean. It makes 3 gallons an hour and runs off our 400w of solar panels. It draws 8amps I think.

When we were in the Western Caribbean we ran it every day for about 2 hours or so and had plenty of water. Of course in the San Blas we used it a bit and showered after each snorkel. We carry about 100 gallons of water in 2 tanks and never worried about water.

We lost our forward tank in the Eastern Carib and got a bit of repair on it when we crossed the Atlantic in 2013 with a crew of 2. We ran the water maker a few times to keep our main tank full and the iffy tan was just back up. In the Med we have used the watermaker a bit as we are not always sure of the water. If we run the engine we make water and sometimes that is a lot as in the Med we either have too much or too little wind.
We find the E80 adequate for our needs. But saying that I would get the 6gal an hour if I could. But we got a heck of a boat show deal on the E80 that included a free cruisers kit that we have had to dig into. And that kit was worth a lot.

If I had to do it again I would do the same.
