Improving Insulation on Existing Fridge / Freezer

We have a Norcold upright-120volt/12 volt Freezer top and fridge on the bottom with a setup similar to this photo.

We'd like to add additional insulation for our upcoming cruising in the tropics.

There are about 2.5 Centimeters from the factory box to Wood cabinet enclosure. Possible alternatives:

1. Adding additional insulation between refrigerator box and cabinet?

2. removing the cover of the factory box inside the cabinet. This would free up space 6 to 8 centimeters to add R 30 insulation --

3. or the spray foam between factory box and cabinet?

Any other suggestions? Do we even really need extra insulation? Anyone else have this type of setup for their refrigeration?

We are also thinking of getting a portable 12v/110 freezer to put on the sun deck for extra freezer capacity.

Thanks!

Adding insulation is probably not a good idea.

In any case, make certain you provide for adequate (more is better) ventilation of the condenser.

Check out the manual for your particular model
