Identify this Bronze Diaphragm Bilge Pump... need to service

Hi
I have a massive manual bilge pump on our Hans Christian. Obviously weight was not a design constraint. That is one big hunk of Bronze.
It looks a lot like an Edson unit, but they usually cast in their name.
I am looking for help sourcing a service kit for it since it is out of the boat right now. I'd love some help to identify it.
Jim

Try commercial marine stores. Pumps like that were almost standard on larger wood fishing boats. Also the makers of bronze fittings use to make deck pumps.

Sure looks like Edson. Are you sure the name isn't cast in the plate on the diaphragm?

Sure looks like an Edson pump. Have you checked to see if the parts for their pump might fit this one. The Edson pumps work really great. Had to pump water above the floorboards out of my boat when I got hit by a storm with cockpit scupper hoses disconnected. Made short work of a lot of water as my boat has a proper sump.

It is an Edson. They are still made but in your choice of bronze or aluminium.

Edson Emergency Bilge Pumps

Repair kits are also sold. Order from any Edson retailer. Don't be put off by all the variations there are really only two sizes.

https://www.edsonpumps.com/products/...gm-pump-parts/

They are a fantastic pump with huge output as you would expect from 2" pipes.

Re: Identify this Bronze Diaphragm Bilge Pump... need to service

I rebuilt mine...same as yours. Ordered kit from Jamestown I believe. Easy rebuild. Yours like mine is bottom suction so will have the kit with the round and square check valve. Be sure to add penetrating oil to the bronze bolts before you try to break them loose. Mine were in there good, and I think I sheared one. Diaphragm comes in 3 different materials, neoprene, viton, hypalon I think. I went with the middle cost one, which will last just a long under normal conditions. In fact, the one I pulled it was still pretty good, but the replacement was cheap insurance. It's the good sealing of the check valves that will pay dividends.

Well I have ordered the Edson Parts, and I hope they fit. I am pretty sure it is not an Edson as they cast their name into everything. But it looks like an excellent quality knock off.

Re: Identify this Bronze Diaphragm Bilge Pump... need to service

chinese knockoff of edson and others who made pumps for taiwanese boats.
between 1975 and 1979, relations between china and republic of china, aka formosa aka taiwan loosened some and trade opened between the two. seems many taiwan built boats are proof of this gradual change in relations. most taiwan boats use usa traded goods, these pumps are chinese builds found also in formosa 51. later builds of formosa 41 and others with manual bilge pumps. i just recently learned this as i thought our parts were usa based due to the position republic of china holds as protectorate of usa.

mine no longer has the pump but i would love to know where these parts are located . please update as you are able.

Hey Zeehag,

Any further update on the pump parts? I'm in the same situation.

Cheers!

When you say service kit, you mean the bellows....right ?? Wouldn't it be possible to just measure the old bellows and find a similar sized one ??

Very good chance but I would like to attempt to find the service kit which includes two valve assemblies as well as the diaphragm and sealing washers.

Re: Identify this Bronze Diaphragm Bilge Pump... need to service

just for funsies, I googled Edson pumps...the only big difference that immediately springs to my mind, is that the intake on your bilge pump appears to be on the bottom, whereas, the common Edson pump has the intake on the side, but the rest of it appears to be much the same.

I'd take the thing apart and take the pieces with you to West Marine or some other marine chandlery to compare with what is on the rack.

Re: Identify this Bronze Diaphragm Bilge Pump... need to service

Yes, the OPs pump is an Asian "knock off" of the Edson product, I've seen dozens of them over the years.
Replacement Edson parts may or may not fit perfectly, but probably can be "fitted" to work just fine.
Edson makes that pump in both side and bottom inlet style.
In bronze the Edson price is either an arm AND a leg, or your first born, take your choice.

We have a Whale gusher 30 which we need to rebuild. Cannot remember the gallons per minute but it’s a great pump for the money.
