Hi everyone. Can you use a house toilet size seat and bowl in a boat? After being in several boats I realized I am not a sailor cause I don't have a small round butt! But I try.

In a sailing boat the toilet is normally located below the waterline, so a household toilet would not work in a normal boat installation situation. The other problem is that household toilets need a sufficient amount of water to remain in the bowl which would not work well since sailing vessels tend to "heel" enough occasionally to spill the bowl contents or the water tank into the interior of the boat.
- - There are special marine MSD's (toilets) available that are larger than the most common ones you see in marine stores or marine discount houses.

It can be done
I have been on several vessels with household toilets and cisterns with push button flush, all powered vessels and all above waterline installations

Not sure how they did it but I was pretty impressed

Several of the high end marine toilet mfrs offer electric macerating models that are full household size all-china "thrones" that use household toilet seats...some even offer elongated bowls. These are MARINE toilets-priced from the $600s USD up to well over $1000. They don't use nearly as much power and flush water as they used to...some use sea water, some even use onboard pressurized fresh water (it IS safe to connect toilets designed to use pressurized fresh water to the potable water plumbing...just don't ever connect a sea water toilet to your fresh water plumbing)...have up to 4 flush options and can even hold water in the bowl "like the one at home."

Seat yes. It hangs over the front of the bowl by a couple of inches but does work. Toilet itself, I don't think so

As above, they make household size marine toilets. And household size seata usually, although they look funny, but it' your a$$ thats going to look at it....

Which is something I am seriously considering doing (toilet/wet locker)
Who needs yet another queen sized cabin over the engine-room anyway?

When I bought my Jabsco I had the options of compact or regular sized bowl, so naturally, with my ass in mind, I bought the regular for the same price as I have oodles of space.
It has the same sized seat as a regular domestic khazi.

Thanks for the input. Being Australian the water only sits at the s bend and not almost to the top. Unless you were at a lean of over 80 degrees water spill would not be a problem.

There's something else to consider: flush water supply and volume. Volume: Domestic toilets use 1.5 gallons...today's macerating electric toilets need only .5 gallon. Not a consideration if you're flushing overboard, but definitely one if flushing into a tank.

Supply: On land, the pressurized water system fills a tank...gravity dumps a large enough volume of water from it--typically at least 1.5 gallons--to force open a flapper valve in the discharge, starting a siphon that pulls everything out and sends it on its way. So you'd need a flush water tank mounted above the bowl and a pump to fill it with sea water...or, if you have the fresh water to spare, you could connect it to the fresh water plumbing.

And then there's the matter of getting the flush to its destination. There's no pump in a domestic toilet...the siphon and gravity are all their is. So it would have to be downhill all the way. I suppose you COULD add a pump to the discharge line... But by the time you do everything necessary--intake pump, discharge pump, plumbing etc--it would be cheaper and a LOT easier to just install a full household size MARINE toilet!

I've been looking for a replacement lightweight head for my Dragonfly.
The original is all nylon for weight savings, so I took a look at the Thetford X Light.
Are they kidding??? $10 grand for a head?
They're saying it's a great way for racing teams to save weight.
Equal weight savings could be done by leaving one case of beer on the dock!

Installation of a household toilet on a boat has nothing to do with the vessels waterline relationship. If the toilet is above a holding tank, all you need is gravity. Installed 4 of them on an 83ft restaurant boat 35yrs ago.

I've seen Turkish Gulets with basicaly household toilets. They are large boats, 20 meters plus, and have a great deal of water capacity and are built for day charters so can refill easily.
