Yep, if it's gas always be on top of the whole system. I like it and use it. But if you are a "never look until something goes bad" type... don't use it!

And don't berth next to me!

That goes for those with disposable propane tanks on board, as well

Re: Hot water on demand?

Have a chat to these guys:-

Home - Keto Marine

They do a webasto marine diesel water heater on a small pressurised tank it gives you something like 2 gallons of water in 5mins. and is designed to work on a boat. we looked at it as an alternative to the calorifier tank but haven't had the available funds to go that way yet!

Re: Hot water on demand?

Hhmmmmmm. Ok I'm listening. Please tell me what a " plumbed propane system would look like.

Do I secure a 20 pounder to the mast, and plumb from their,

OR
Do I plumb a hard line from the steam, thru the cabin, or bilge, to the head. I do not have a gas diesel or propane locker. This scares the crap out of me, joints elbows etc etc, are all potential leak points.

Also the bilge alarm, is it specific to boats. And where do I get one.

Our home is gas heated and we cook with NG aswell. Is the alarm like the two we have in our home, or different?

lastly your saying propane settles, I get that how does that same propane fumes go away? Or are you suggesting those fumes stay indefinitely?

Folks, I don't have big boats like you, nor am I willing to pay marine mechs 80.00 an hour, for what I can do. My labor is free, and I'm a fairly decent mech.

Thank you in advance.

Re: Hot water on demand?

Boats in Moss Landing Ca. I'm in Southern Oregon for at least two more weeks.

I can send you the survey if you would like. My email is

dirkandcarole8495@gmail.com. If you don't mind send me an email, and then I can forward boat survey to you.

I'm not a computer guy so this is the only solution I have to get you pics.

It would really help a lot of you would start by reading the ABYC requirements. You will learn a lot from that even if you decide not to follow them.

The gas container needs to be located somewhere, where the gas will flow overboard in case of a spill. It flows like water, which makes it easy to visualize. For God's sake, not at the mast, in the cockpit, etc.

If you don't want to invest in a gas locker, then then one decent place for the gas bottle will be hung out over the pushpit. This will look a little trailer park-ish, but it's safe.

Regulator, solenoid valve, bubbler. Then a long continuous run of proper gas hose, with grommets and chafe protection every time it runs through a bulkhead, to the appliance.

The bubbler will allow you to verify that gas is not leaking.

As to the propane alarm -- you need a marine one, because the heads of them are highly sensitive to getting wet. A land one won't last long in a boat. You should get one with two sensors -- one to put below the appliance, and the other down in the bilge (but somewhere where it is not likely to get splashed) somewhere near where the gas would flow in case of a leak.

This is a good one: 24 Volt Pilot Gas Alarm (Twin Channel)

Two off the shelf options for hanging off a rail. I like the setup from Sure Marine but it's only a 6lb.

Re: Hot water on demand?

My Propane tanks on the Hans Christian were just tied to the stern pushpit. Whatever your boat is you will want a pad or something for the tanks to rest on. Other than that it's not hard to set up. If you want it better looking get a Sunbrella cover for it.

Did you use steel or aluminum tanks? Are you still on a Hans? Thats a dream boat for me, love the lines of every Hans ever built.

No don't have the Hans anymore. Solid boat for sure. Didn't go to weather well though. But they are all a compromise. I had Aluminum tanks . They make fiberglass ones now. With a cover, a steel tank would last quite a while. They make little 3# and 5# ones too. Another option is the exchange tank thing, a bit more for gas, but you get a new tank each time!
I recently had a tank go out of date. When I tried to fill it the guy just told me "go exchange it for one of those exchange tanks and then next time it's empty I can fill it". He was right.
