Re: Holding tank discharge via thru-deck opening

Thank you all for the replies. I will fix the seacock valve and stay true to the original design. Already pushed the three new hoses through which was the toughest job.

Re: Holding tank discharge via thru-deck opening

Side issue: we created an extention of the pushpit to accommodate a toilet seat so someone could just "go" in the ocean. Worked well. We used a pressure hose to "wash" down body parts since using toilet paper would only work if there was no wind. No law against doing it directly into the ocean. Onesies and twosies were performed well. Be on the lookout for periscopes however. My naked wife found that out to her embarrassment.

I wouldn't do this. I really wouldn't. I would lift heaven & earth to get that seacock repaired. In the meantime, I'd use a plastic trash bag for each trip to the head.

Re: Holding tank discharge via thru-deck opening

Just to bring closure to this, I found a bigger wrench and fixed the seacock valve afloat. It really took 15 min once I had the proper tool. The deck discharge should be looked at as an emergency measure if things went really south once a season or so. Most sailors in the US pump at a facility 99% of the time.

Thank you all for making me do the effort, though.

I would say fix it, unless you plan to never go offshore.....

Re: Holding tank discharge via thru-deck opening

I don't have overboard discharge on my boat.

My thought is to make up a fitting to the deck pump out port with a hose over the side, into the water.

I would then block the vent line and pump into the tank, creating a slight pressure. This would cause the waste to push out the deck fitting, down into the water, creating a siphon.

Why would this not work ?

Sounds like a great idea...until the pressure blows a hose off and the entire tank empties into the bilge.

Pressure ? No pressure, there is a 1 1/2 inch hole in the tank with a hose going over the side. Much larger then the vent line.

I believe you suggested pressurizing the tank to get it going. You would be suprised how things can come apart even though you think it's not a lot of pressure.

Think about it, one of the brown trout get's caught in the outlet while you are trying to start the syphon and....

I suppose that could happen.

I do have a Vacuflush system so whatever makes it to the tank is mashed up thru the bowl and then the piston pump first.

If I try this, I will check the clamps on the discharge hose.

All of my tank fittings go in the top of the tank. At least it won't drain out if a hose comes off.

Wouldn't it be easier to just buy a macerator pump, screw it into the deck fitting, attach a hose and pump it out this way?

That's exactly what I did back in the days when I had a trailer boat. I pumped it into the house sewer system.

This has to be a joke. No one can be this naive to think pressurizing a holding tank is a good idea..

The deck pump-out fitting is surely attached to a dip tube through which waste is sucked out of the tank.

Re: Holding tank discharge via thru-deck opening

No joke, I'v seen adaptors that the push engine oil out of 55 gallon drums with 2 to 3 psi.

It has a dip tube right on it, that fit in the big bung hole.

A masarator pump screws right on the pump out fitting ?

As long as you don't mind spraying the entire contents of your tank all over the side of your boat.....
