Any plumber I train will use tape and pipe dope in certain applications. Not with tapered threads but often with straight threads such as with copper or plastic.the tape ads bulk a semi hardening paste will give more seal. Always tape first then dope. Make sure dope is compatable with your plastics. Only blue on abs. A Teflon paste will allow easier removal later. But for a stubborn joint use rector seal.
