Holding tank appropriate for the Caribbean

Hi!

I heard that people, staying for anchor in the same lagoon for a long time, 2-3 weeks or so, empty their sewage tanks at anchor?

It is "death penalty" doing so in Swedish harbours and natural harbours, but I suppose we'll adjust...

Reason for asking this is that we need to exchange our 100 l stainless tank that is not up to the task with a Polyeten tank. How big should we go for, how many litres (or gallons if you prefer, I can convert)? I suppose large enough for a family for three weeks is unrealistic. If I can go down in size it'd be awesome!

Norlin 37, so we are limited in space.

Hello Bob,
I'd guess that over 50% of cruisers in any harbor in the Caribbean don't EVER use holding tanks. There is one heck of a lot of water flowing by most harbors so usually it isn't an issue, but in enclosed bays, like Simpson Bay on St. Maarten, it is IMO.

Do they actually freak out on discharging holding tanks in Sweden? I had heard that many go offshore and dump their tanks. Is that true? I understand when in harbors you don't.

We might downgrade to 75 l septitank maybe. If only used in certain lagoons in the Carribbean... The current steel tank has bumps, there is a vague bad smell in the boat, I don't trust the soft hoses used. I will replace to hard PVC tubes where applicable + proper soft hoses where there must be soft ones (where there is risk of incoming water leak). I found a good american article on this:

I think that is a good option and will probably look at one in the future. If you visit the United States it really would be nice.

There are no pumpouts in most islands in the Caribbean. At least I never saw them. There isnt much choice but to send it overboard. Even if there were pumpouts, the sewage would end up in the ocean anyway. They dont treat it most places, they just let the tide take it away.
