Ok Folks I have just gotten very very lucky As I was sailing south on the Peloponnese, I stopped in to Pylos and found a good cheap Refrigeration man with in an hour of getting there and he came onboard and had all the tools, electronic leak detector everything loaded it up with 134 Refrigerant and its seems to be working better than ever now-just froze a quart of water in about 4-5 hours!
His name is Lyras Theod his number is 6947779028 I highly recommend him he speaks ok English and only charged me 40 euro- I’ve been blessed! I had just about given up and was going to use Ice this year i gave him a 10 e tip!

opps I spoke too soon , still leaking ! I suppose its like a leaky roof easy to fix if you can find where its leaking! Yes thats a great site I have it bookmarked !

If tech does not get a signal with his leak detector when unit is running try stopping it and try testing it again. If unit is water cooled remove water hose from condenser and test condenser for internal leak. If leak takes more than 12 hours to lose plate cooling then the best way to test condenser is to remove water hoses and place balloons on condenser for a 12 hour test. If balloons inflate even slightly condenser has failed. If your unit has a Isotherm through hull condenser the only way to test is to look for bubbles coming out of through hull fitting.

The guy came back and could not find the leak . He added r22 in the systum does anyone know if this will harm it mixed with the 134- hes coming back later to check somthing - it is working good with the r 22 ..so far ..until it leaks out

Technical books need to be updated regularly. Twenty five year ago when I sold my first of five books in CW magazine I advised those that purchased books I was available to assist then if they needed help. Before the internet this was difficult but today it is easy with my forum and email.

The Boating equipment industry unlike the automobile and aviation industries do very little in the way of after market technical updates. Before the internet there was no way for boaters and manufacturers to broadcast equipment deficiency and corrective actions. Auto and aircraft manufactures issue routine service bulletins and typical repair data to repair agencies. Everyone who owns a boat needs to have a basic knowledge of all onboard equipment.

Now that technical assistance is disappearing in the small boat refrigeration industry the word is these units are expendable so replace it with a new so call improved unit. It is difficult to find experienced people to repair these small refrigeration units and when you do find one they are very expensive and first trip to boat generally won’t fix problem. Today too many boaters and so called technicians think when there is a problem with one of these small refrigeration units they should break into the refrigerant circuit by connecting gauges. When a Danfoss BD compressor fails to run it is an electrical problem telling electrical module to abort startup, the exception of course is when destructive testing with gauges or adding refrigerant are involved.

I can not tell you what will happen with a mixture of 134a and Freon R22 but it is not a good idea to mix refrigerants. The BD35 is designed for 134a and ester oil. If the 134a is removed Freon R12 can be used. The problem with R22 is it is a much higher pressure refrigerant and will not function well in that unit.
