Head/Shower on 74 Hallberg-Rassy Rasmus 35

Hi, I'm new to the forum. I see a lot of information on the Hallberg-Rassy Rasmus 35 but can't quite find the answer I am looking for. What is the shower situation on the 74 Rasmus ketch rig? I can't find a single picture of the floor of the head anywhere on the internet. The reason I ask is because I am on the verge of travelling to Florida from the North East to look at a well restored and equipped 74 Rasmus, if she looks good I am considering making an offer. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks

I just did a simple google search on the Hallberg-Rassy Rasmus 35 and looked at images and it came up with several images of the interior plan.

Thanks, tons of pics of the interior- which is beautiful scandinavian post-modern, but none of the drain system in the floor of the head....or any mention or sight of the shower nozzle.

Ask Celestialsailor here on the forum. I can't remember what the drain looked like but I had a few showers in there.

Just start a new thread Hallberg Rassey Rasmus and I'm certain he will reply.

Re: Head/Shower on 74 Hallberg-Rassy Rasmus 35

The head floor is sealed up wall about 3" and there is a small sump under the vanity with a pump to the sink drain. The sink has an extendable hose with shower nozzle. The entire head is probably 36"x36" but the head door can be left open closing it off to saloon/galley.

If it's Pat's boat, he has a blog about the restoration.

Re: Head/Shower on 74 Hallberg-Rassy Rasmus 35

Thank you so much. She is named Snowbird, there's a blog about her, lots of pics- I'd love to hear anyone's opinion. Not sure if I love the galley layout- but the boat has been well restored and refit, just back from the Bahamas. A couple of issues, wind vane broken, fuel polish needed, but the original overpowered engine has been replaced with a nice 2005 Yanmar that is running well with low hours. I know my way around a Yanmar fairly well. I need a bluewater boat and the Rasmus has a great reputation. Slowish, a little tough to maneuver in tight harbors, but safe and perform well in heavy weather. It's a ketch and I singlehand, so that's a bonus for me too. Love a nice dry center cockpit w a hard permanent dodger too. No roof to it but I can throw that on.

Any burning thoughts from anyone?

@jkindredpdx, thanks for the link, I've definitely read every word of that Rasmus' refit! Very Very helpful as I try to make this decision.

Re: Head/Shower on 74 Hallberg-Rassy Rasmus 35

+1 what Skiprjohn said. Celestialsailor rebuilt refrigerator, added hardtop, etc... and has been helpful.

I've lived on Sedna (#277 1974) off and on for 4 years with very few mods and she's mostly original, but I haven't crossed oceans so can't speak to galley (I like to use chart table for counter space). Comfortable for 1 person full time, might be crowded for two or more for more than a long weekend. Love the cockpit and hard windscreen... I plan to build a hard dodger when my canvas gets old. Easy to single hand, but it's not friendly in reverse in tight quarters and took a little getting used to.

I think the build quality is great and it's a good cruiser. I'm not a fan of center cockpits but the layout is good. It makes a great cruiser and is just the right size for one or a couple.

From this floor plan, it seems you'll shower sitting on the head

That's what I did aboard the Rasmus. Way better than my Mariner 35 that had no shower at all.

Those line drawings make it look more like a yawl with the after mast being so short.

Strictly speaking -as you know, of course- the KETCH has its mizzen mast forward of the rudder post, while the YAWL has its mizzen mast aft of the rudder post On the other hand, you're right in the sense that, on the Rasmus 35, the mizzen is rather small & is used mainly to balance the sail plan, while in a real ketch, the mizzen participates in the propulsion of the sailboat. In a previous life, I met Donald Street (A Cruising Guide to The Lesser Antilles) aboard his Iolaire, a true motorless yawl. Donald was a Yawl evangelist, bragging about why the Yawl was the perfect cruising rig... I remember that one of his argument was that he would keep his mizzen up when anchored to prevent Iolaire from tacking on its anchor in windy anchorages
