I agree zeehag. We had a Raritan PHii before our electric Jabsco and had to rebuild it twice a year, and it still leaked water around the upper seal where the handle went in. I couldn't wait to get rid of it.

Re: HATE Jabsco Manual Toilet - should we Convert to Electric ?

Hi , I have just binned the old manual toilet {have no idea what brand it was} after it keep blocking every second time and leaked ,and am about to put in an electric jabsco or tml and was wondering if the electric toilets use much water each flush as the holding tank is only 80 ltr ?

It depends on how long you hold the handle (button) down

Re: HATE Jabsco Manual Toilet - should we Convert to Electric ?

I have 2 manual Jabcos onboard that seem too work fine in commercial use the last-5-6 years- I do rebuild them about every 2 years-guests are a little put off by all the pumping-Is there any good electric toilet worth putting in

Ram, If you want to try an electric toilet you should consider the Raritan Sea Era conversion kit. Raritan makes good products and with the conversion kit you don't need to buy a new toilet bowl. You can use the bowl from your Jabsco manual toilets. The Sea Era conversion kit is available in many configurations and voltages. The basic kit flushes with salt water but it is also available as a fresh water flush or one that you can choose to use salt or fresh water.

Re: HATE Jabsco Manual Toilet - should we Convert to Electric ?

The SeaEra is a fine toilet...but, by itself, doesn't offer a choice of switching between sea water and fresh. That requires installing Raritan's "Sea Fresh System:" http://www.raritaneng.com/pdf_files/.../L471V0210.pdf They only provide the details for installing with the Elegance, but it can be installed with any toilet designed to use pressurized fresh water...a second remote sea water intake pump has to be installed.

And only the pressurized FRESH water versions can use the optional 3-way "momentary" or 4-way "smart flush" panel.

If you want things simple and very reliable then consider a Wilcox & Crittenden "Skipper". They are no longer manufactured but you can get them used. Rebuild kits and parts are still manufactured. The only plastic part on the entire head is the seat.

Re: HATE Jabsco Manual Toilet - should we Convert to Electric ?

If the pump is removable from your toilet, consider tossing it and making an adaptor plate to take a hose to a Whale Gusher pump or similar. This is easy to do and will pump your head out for years with no service needs. A smaller hand diaphragm pump supplies the flushing water.
Very easy for guests to use ; "This handle flushes, this other one pumps it out".
We are now on our second pump in 25 yrs with absolutely no services in between.

Regards,

Richard.

Re: HATE Jabsco Manual Toilet - should we Convert to Electric ?

I have Raitan PH IIc and it is in constant use for about 5 years then rebuild. Most of the issues are hoses connecting the head to the tank or through hull, y valve etc. The Jabsco manual units are cheap throwaways. Throw them away. Electric heads just have additional issues. Its usually the hose. Just pull it out and replace it or bang it on the dock enough to break up the calcium. Muratic acid works also but I did not say that....

Re: HATE Jabsco Manual Toilet - should we Convert to Electric ?

I just converted my jabsco to electric. Am guessing you will use 1 liter per flush if done conservatively and not wastefuly.

I think it is worthwhile. It is very easy to use and has a mercerator.

Re: HATE Jabsco Manual Toilet - should we Convert to Electric ?

it seems whatever style/brand of toilet you have, if it breaks or malfunctions, you will hate it and want something else. i got here because i've just fixed the electric jabsco on the sailboat, again. thinking to chuck it and get a manual.

i learned a few things:
1) hair ties that fall into the head will destroy a macerator easily, and people will hold the button down til the motor burns out.
2) never use copper pipe in your vent hose. the boat owner didn't want to buy more hose, so he extended it with some copper pipe he had on hand. 5 years later it was so corroded inside it clogged. (like cholesterol does to arteries) when that happens, the toilet FILLS BACK UP with nastiness after you flush it, and then air bubbles out of the toilet for 15 minutes from the pressurized holding tank. http://letswonderful.org/pix/bubbler.MOV

the almost new manual on the other boat has also had problems. sucked up ^%$@# milfoil and clogged. toilets that don't work... hate them all, no matter what style or brand. cause I'M always the lucky guy who gets to fix them. not knowledge i ever desired to have.
