Green discoloration or coeeotion(?) on bronze thru hulls and fittings

Hello fello sailors

I have this classic Cal cruising 46

The bronze thru hulls and other fittings are all turquoise green

How do you clean that off?

You don't!

This is the normal colour for bronze aboard.

It's called patina and no there is no need to clean it. Happens when the bronze reacts with sulfur in the environement.
But if you want to clean, either scrub with a wire brush or use vinegar.

Green discoloration or accretion?

It's a light surface coating of corrosion product. That's how bronze corrodes, with a green coppery product. It's OK, it's not structurally serious or anything, you can deal with it or leave it as it is.

How to deal with it?? Get some Brasso brass polish and polish it.

As far as I know, it is better to leave it ass once it is green in the outside the corrosion process won't keep evolving.

If you scrub/polish it, the outside corrosion process will evolve again and the result is that in the long run, you will be feeding the corrosion and might end with thinner walls.

That would be verdigris and the reason why the Statue of Liberty and copper roofs turn green.


It is Poseidon's way to telling you that you have been a very negligent boat owner and failed to meticulously polish, clean, and protect the brightwork on your boat. Or paint it.


You'd better find a good excuse, because now we're going to send Martha Stewart down to do a real white-glove inspection of your boat and find out what else you've been neglecting.
