Full O' CRAP!

So today in a fit of boat maintenance boredom between coats of Cetol on the toe rail, I had a call from Mother Nature. As I sat on the best seat in the house, it dawned on me that it was a pain in the butt to add enough water to the bowl for ol' number two.

My boat was built with an electric head (which was the first thing taken shore side when I took possession of her)... I replaced the porcelain god with a good old Jabsco manual pumper. A legacy of the old device was a big pushbutton and a handy wire run to the rear of the head. I had an old vane pump sitting in my E-150 Dock Box up in the parking lot as well.

A few fittings Tee'd into the lines on the Jabsco and I had a HYBRID! For liquid waste, the head works as it always has with the manual handle. But when solids are in the offing, a quick push of the rubber button adds salt water to the bowl.... VOILA`! Poo soup!

Needless to say the olfactory benefits of depositing last night's dinner into a bowl full of water were well recognized by Mr Thomas Crapper (the inventor of the modern flush toilet.... Not to slight John Harrington who actually had the idea 200 years prior)

Oh well... back to the brite-work

Clever...but a lot of effort to avoid just putting two cups of water from the sink into the bowl with a plastic cup ahead of use.

And btw, Sir Thomas Crapper is not the inventor of the flush toilet.

I haven't the slightest idea who John Harrington was...however the first person to take out a patent for a "water closet" was a Scot names Alexander Cumming in 1775. Joseph Adamson took out the first patent for a siphonic flush toilet in in 1853. Crapper would have been about 10 years old at the time.

I seem to recall hearing that the Romans of antiquity had "flush" toilets, which is to say they piped running water below where they sat and moved their bowels. I have never heard where I was carried off to.

The earliest identifiable flushing toilets have been found in the ruins of the palace of King Minos on the island of Crete, circa 1500 B.C. Rain water or water from cisterns traveled though conduits built into the wall to flush away the waste from a master bathroom presumably belonging to the monarch, as well as several other toilets located within palace walls.

No society of old advanced plumbing technology as much as the Roman Empire. As long ago as 800 B.C. the Romans built enormous sewers to drain waste from the city. The Cloaca Maxima was Imperial Romes main drainage trunk. Amazingly, it remains in use today as part of modern Romes drainage system. Public lavatories date back just as far, with water constantly running beneath the latrines to wash the waste into Romes sewer system.

It is often incorrectly quoted that the toilet was invented by a Mr Thomas Crapper in the 18th century. Actually, simple toilets have been used since Babylonian times. In 1596, John Harrington invented an indoor water closet for Queen Elizabeth I. But Harrington then published a book with tasteless puns about his own invention. The toilet then dropped into obscurity for nearly 200 years. In 1775, London watchmaker Alexander Cummings patented the forerunner of today’s toilet. the standard flush toilet.

I would imagine the very first self flushing toilet was a river and a tree branch hanging over it.
