Wheels' idea is best, but for those of you whom might not like to mete out justice in so *fun* a manner might want to install a bronze ballvalve somewhere below the deck fill, but which is easily reachable from inside your locked cabin.

Unless you like paying fines to the government for spilling diesel, you'll have to remember to open the valves prior to filling...

In our case, it would be an expensive proposition (4 diesel deck fills), but less than the cost of each tankful of diesel (ours range from 75 to 95 US gallons each) if even one were siphoned.

Simple. Place a black cap and the words Holding/sewerage tank on the fuel filler point and the Red fuel cap on the Holding tank suction point and never forget you swapped it.

I heard a story about a fella who used to have a problem with his outboard boat gas getting siphoned when he left the gas can in the boat. He put his good can in the shed for storage and put an old gas can in the boat with 2 gallons of gas and a half gallon of used motor oil. The next day he spotted the neighbors kid driving down the street with a huge cloud of thick smoke coming from the exhaust!!!

I luv a happy ending!

On our Wellington mast trip, we decided to fill up the tanks for the return to ensure we had plenty. We went over to the fuel birth and the Marina guy came down with his card and set things going. But I soon realised we were pumping nothing but air. We had several attempts at getting it going, but still just air. The guy said that was odd as they had just received 3000ltrs of fuel the day before. He went up to the tank and kicked it, It gave a resounding empty "Bong". He undid the cap and pulled out the dipstick and sure enough, the 3000ltrs had been stolen. Someone must have driven a tanker down along the beach at low tide and filled up in the dark of night. Thankfully we had enough fuel to get home again.

I am sort of a chicken I guess because "dumb" criminals can and do get mad at you for those things and retaliate.

I imagine my boat covered (and lockers filled) with my holding tank contents.

There is really nothing you can do if a crook wants to retaliate. Given that, there is no sense in worrying. It will either happen or it wont and no amount of worrying is going to make any difference.

Given it was some dumb kid who was probably mostly embarrassed by it all, probably nothing will happen. Especially since he knows that you know, it is him.

Probably not. The thieves would steal the tape/disk whatever and post their exploits on Youtube!

Yeah, it probably wouldn't stop some thieves, but it might keep your friendly dock neighbor from topping off his tanks at your expense.

Mount a phony camera in a box on the dock with an old antenna sticking out the top. If you want to get elaborate add a battery driven blinking LED. You could even solar charge the battery. Hey, 30 bucks could save you trouble.

We used to leave gas cans half full of gas with lots of sugar in it where they looked like they were supposed to be hidden but could be found by those looking for gas cans.
I don't know if it ever actually did anything, but there were a couple of times that the cans disappeared.
This was at a wrecking yard that I worked at as a kid.
