Frig/freezer Control not Working?

I have an air cooled compressor made by a small firm in Picton, Ontario. The latest trouble seems to be that the temperature control (a dial, running from OFF to 7 (I think)) is not working. The frig/freezer itself is made up of small 10"W X 6"H X 11"D freezer box with a door, which cools down the rest of the old icebox, which then acts as a refrigerator.

Whatever we set the control to, the freezer box goes full blast until is all iced up and the temperature inside the refrigerator is too cold.

I have a spare controller, complete with coil. Is it worth installing this, or is there likely to be a problem somewhere else ?

That control is a thermostat, actually an electro-mechanical Tstat.
Replace it with your spare, or, you could upgrade to a programmable one for about $50.00 which will save some power and give you a digital readout.

I'm not sure what you're saying here. My thermostat has a length of thin tubing which is currently coiled up. I think in the old one, only the end 12" or so were sensitive ? At any rate, with the old one, I have about the end 11" of it INSIDE the freezer box. i.e. the thermostat is working from the INSIDE temperature of the freezer box. I think the voltage going to/coming from the thermostat is only 5 volts (I had trouble with this a few years ago as well).

Surely I can't just get on of the house type thermostat's and stick it on the wall of the frig part of the old icebox ? And what's the point of it being programmable ? I only want the frig when I want to go on a cruise, and that varies a lot !

Thanks.

Re: Frig/freezer control not working ?

My spare mechanical thermostat has three terminals on the back: 2 side by side vertically, plus one more horizontally. (Depending on how you hold it !)

The electric cable coming from the compressor has only 2 wires, red and white. How do these connect up to the thermostat ? Does the red one (and thus the white one) have to go to a particular terminal ?

Re: Frig/freezer control not working ?

Another question !

The last 12" of the coil is supposed to lie inside the freezer box. How can I fix it to the box, or would it work just as well "taped" to the top of the box ? Is there a sticky tape that works below minus 10 degrees centigrade ?

Re: Frig/freezer control not working ?

So I'll answer my own questions, thanks to the wealth of info on the Internet !

The thermostat is made by Danfoss. I should have guessed that one really. I found it by using the search term: "mechanical thermostat refrigeration three terminals" . Danfoss came up with a number of small pictures that looked like mine. They supplied literature and contact phone numbers. Via the literature, I discovered the two terminals that should be used. Later on it the day, I got a phone call from Danfoss telling me which terminal should be live.

I think I'll be using 4200 to glue the coil into the freezer box. After all, where I live, the winter temp drops to below -40C, and the caulking in the windows etc, is fine.

Re: Frig/freezer control not working ?

I guess, but I haven't used "frig" as a substitute for f**k for years. When I lived in England, 50 years ago, frig used to be a perfectly good word for refrigerator, "nice" people used it all the time as an abbreviation.

I agree in this case my frig could be called a "f**k" !!

All I can say is that it doesn't come up as short for fridge or refrigerator

I would bet dome would take it as the definition I posted (I didn't write it )
