Re: Fresh water makers best price and performance?

I've heard of big fishies chomping on towed generators.
Seems kinda vulnerable to damage.

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

Have a look at H2O on the Go, australian 12v we have been using for a while, they cost $3500 Australian, so about $2500 USD. Most of equipment is from USA like high pressure pump etc.

Just looked up the 12 v DC units and they are really power hungry 15 amp draw and only 12 Ltr per hour which means about 5 ah per gallon product water heck my katadyn 35E only uses 3.5 ah per gallon product water and about the same price USD.

Re: Fresh water makers best price and performance?

hi Newhaul,
That is correct for one membrane 12 LPH system but the 2 membrane 20 lph system (same motor pump combo) is 15 amps for 5.3 gallon so that is 2.8 amp hours per gallon. So better than the katadyne 35e and you can make 20 litres in one hour instead of 4.5 hours which means you can get it over with quicker and then have much longer to regain the solar energy back to battery.
Price for 12 lph system is about $2500 USD from my quick calculation, and the 20 lph is about $3130 again from quick google of their prices and exchange rate. I thought the katadyne were quite a bit more than that, will have to google.

Sure take a look. It's about to change in a few months. The Katadyn line is not on there yet because I still have a few things to get ready. But in a nut shell I do carry everything Katadyn now. One of the things I discussed with Katadyn was the need, as I saw it, to set up easier service abilities for the company and customers. So Halden Marine Service is now an official service center for Katadyn watermakers. We will soon be able to handle all repairs and parts for these units from our Fort Lauderdale shop. Though we are not 100% ready yet, if you have any questions or need anything we can still get it done.

I always like to look at the comparisons. As my Mom used to say "The devil is in the details" or the numbers in this case. First, to be fair, Katadyn hasn't made the 35e for a long time. It is now the 40e, which can also be operated manually in emergencies.. The 40e produces 1.6gph using 2.5 amp so slightly more efficient. Of course these numbers simply double for the 80e which is a better comparison to the 20 lph unit. The 80e is still slightly more efficient than the 20lph unit. But to be honest these power numbers are so small in difference to not really mean much of anything in the real world and the types of boats these small units would be installed in. But even these power numbers are quite high when compared to a Spectra 150. Katadyn offers a three year warranty, I didn't notice on a cursory glance what H2O on the Go offers. The Katadyn 40e and 80e are going to be more money to be sure. But they've been around a lot longer than most watermaker companies. I only wish the very best for any small company, but I've been in this business for a long time. I've seen a lot of new watermaker companies come and go. The usual theme for many of them is "We can build and sell it cheaper" This is a very tough business model to maintain for the long run in the watermaker business. I know I spend a lot more time in phone calls, service, repairs, and hand holding, than I do in sales. Something for both the customer and new business to consider when trying to save a dollar.

I had a very lovely woman from CF come up to my booth at the boat show">Miami boat show a few years ago. She said in all seriousness. "You don't look at all in real life like you do in your picture on the CF"
Collagen is a wonderful thing.
