Exhaust for midship engine

I am having built a 65' yacht with midship engine room. Will have gas/water separation in the exhaust. Is it a practicable alternative to have a 135HP propulsion motor and gensets exhaust to the side rather than via gas-tight casing through the aft cabin to the stern? I can see difficulties with back-pressure when motor-sailing.

I have seen many yachts with exhausts out the side.

Gord, Thanks for that reference. I know the principles are the same whether side or stern exit. Wondering about back-pressure if motor sailing and if exit to both sides would be required. I guess so, since this is a sailing vessel which is bound to dip its gunwales sooner or later.
