Re: Engel fridge/freezer deal!!!

We bought an engles conversion kit for our ice box on a previous boat, it was excellent, but it was a little noisy however that may have been due to the compressor mounting, it was keyhole surgery. Great unit and easy to install.

As far as the Engle goes, it's a totally 100% quality piece of kit. They'll take being bashed around in the back of a jeep and still keep on working. Bashing in a jeep is far worse than any sailboat will ever experience. I think I've had bruises on my bruises from jeeping. Off roaders absolutely love the Engle fridges - they work great and take an amazing amount of abuse.

I've got a neighbor that has one for his beer fridge. It's always a perfect 31 degrees F. (That's just a little below 0 for the rest of the planet that uses non-silly units) Perfectly amazingly cold beer. He bought it when he was a avid off-road motorcyclist. Time has removed that hobby, but the fridge is still working perfectly.

Minus 17-20 degrees C is what it takes to keep ice cream from getting soft.

Re: Engel fridge/freezer deal!!!

I got a reply last night that the unit had shipped via FEDEX but the tracking status is currently "Label Created". Delivery is scheduled for Friday. I will be very impressed if I ordered a 50 lb unit on Tuesday and I get it on Friday or even Monday with FREE shipping.

Re: Engel fridge/freezer deal!!!

We have had an Engel 45 for about 3 years. As far as rattling goes, ours was almost silent until one day it seemed that something worked loose and then it started rattling. This went on for a few months until one day when I got tired of the sound and smacked it. No rattling since.

As far as the consumption goes, in a warm cabin and with the freezer set on 4 or 4.5 we use about 3 amps and hour and about 34-36 amp hours total a day, as measured by a meter and comparing my amp hour consumption with it on and with it off.

As far as issues... my only one is that the dial does not “click in” and it’s fairly easy to accidentally bump the dial and turn it up or turn it down, with obvious implications if you are using it as a freezer or fridge.

Re: Engel fridge/freezer deal!!!

I made tge mistake of buying an Engel. It cools fine but it is very noisy and vibrates badly, like it is out of balance or something. Even in a house the thing is so loud you can hear it in every room, on a boat I have to turn it off at night. Engel warantee guys weren't intereted in it, just said it was normal for these units.

I meant Fahrenheit, just didn’t say so.
Should have, as most of the world uses Celsius.

The entire developed world except for the USA.

I think also Burma and Liberia, that's it.

My delivery is not clear. FedEx tracking says on FedEx vehicle for delivery in one place but in another place on the same page says Scheduled for delivery Monday by the end of the day???

Hope it's today since I'm leaving town Sat morning.

Called FedEx for clarification and about the time an agent pickup I got a knock on the door.

Very disappointed. It's been plugged in for 3 minutes and hasn't made ice cubes yet.

It did make a slight low frequency hum but nothing I can't live with and it diminished as it cooled down.

My main complaint, wish it weighed 5 lbs instead of 50 lbs but guess that's the nature of the beast. Would also be nice if there was some indication of the temp. Think I'll get a cheap thermometer to hang inside.

Re: Engel fridge/freezer deal!!!

Got mine on Saturday. Already had a camping trip planned so it ran off of the truck battery most all of Saturday afternoon thru Sunday. Works great. Very quiet with just a low hum. But it is pretty heavy. So far very happy.

Made a two day drive from New England to FL. Ran on 12V in the car, 110 in the hotel room.

Comments so far.

- It's pretty heavy for hauling in and out of the car.

- Got a cheap thermometer to monitor the temp but with the box almost full it was right at freezing on the bottom but perfect fridge temps on top. That was with very occasional opening.

- Sound levels unnoticeable in the car or hotel room.

-40 qts is smaller it sounded to me, especially when I got the interior dimensions and looked at a tape measure. However it held much more than I expected.

- Did I mention it isn't very light weight?

Did you try it at different settings? I set it on 2 for cold beer and waters and that seemed to be perfect. Right around 33F. On the way home (2 hour drive) I had a few waters left so I turned it down to 5 and the waters were frozen when I got home.

Thanks again for the heads up on the deal. I did see the price has gone up a little to 649 now. Will have to see how it holds up on the boat and taking road trips, but so far happy.
