Dry Flushing the Head

I have the Raritan ph2 toilet.

For what reasons do we "dry flush" marine toilets?

When the head is not in use should the selector be in dry flush mode?

I use the dry setting to flush the bowl after first using the wet side to put some water in the bowl. I also leave the valve to dry which seals off the water from the bowl. Works best that way and limits the amount of water pumped to the holding tank. But then my line from the head to holding tank is short and drains by gravity.

I have the same head. Other than limiting what goes into the holding tank, it also closes the inlet valve and prevents the toilet bowl from filling with water, which it may do depending on it's height above the waterline, your plumbing configuration, and whether the boat is heeling or not.

Which it will NOT do if a vented loop is installed in the intake as shown on page 5 of the installation instructions http://www.raritaneng.com/pdf_files/ph_II/L04v0505.pdf (hint: the line between the thru-hull and the pump is the wrong location for it).

Vented loop on the intake side of the pump is incorrect; it needs to be on the discharge side of the pump (the discharge INTO the bowl)

I dry flush to get as much of the water out of the pipes so theres less calcium buildup.
I pump hard and fast till I hear air bubbles pop out the boat.

Hmmm I have a properly plumbed and functioning vented loop but when offshore and set to discharge directly overboard I sometimes get the bowl backing up if it is not pumped dry. Need to look into that.
