Dedicated skin fitting for fridge drain?

I am replacing skin fittings and valves on my Lagoon, and have not decided what to do with the fridge drain.

Why would there be a dedicated 3/4" skin fitting and valve mounted just below the waterline just so a fridge can drain? The Lagoon owners manual does show it in their diagram, so it's not an aftermarket idea. Surely, in most circumstances the flow from a fridge would only be very small.

So, I'm thinking of fibregalssing that hole and just draining the fridge into the bilge. If I decide to wash out the fridge or something I can always divert the outflow to a container while I do the job.

It would be easier just to replace the fittings, and I already have them, but once less hole is attractive.

Opinions?

OK I would keep the overboard discharge think worst case a gallon of milk leaks in the fridge. Do you want it to drain overboard or into the bilge? Below the waterline means water stop for cold escaping.

Regardless of how careful you are, you will be sending food particles, beverages, organic "stuff" into the bilge to percolate. Maybe not such a good idea.

For the occasional times you want to clean or drain the fridge, you have the perfect means to do so. Send the stuff overboard.

I'd leave it as is.

Would it not be better to have above WL thru hull and a looped drain to hold cold.

I cannot understand having another leak point for this trivial purpose.

But I am a bit paranoid about thru hulls.😃

I have a salt water pump and have a y valve. Either pump salt water to sink or pump fridge to sink. Works well

Far to many holes in those things in my opinion. Put a sea chest in each hull would resolve a lot of issues.

I'd glass it over. You don't need it.

Re: Dedicated skin fitting for fridge drain?

I haven't got a Lagoon unfortunately. A skin fitting like you describe should be perfectly safe if the sea cock is turned off. You could have a small tank the fridge drains into before the sea cock. You could occasionally open the cock to drain the tank, then close it again.
You can have multiple drains going into a tank which is then drained by one skin fitting so there may be additional uses for that drain if you have a small collection tank.

I wouldn't glass it over as its got to be safe simply turned off. Sounds as though it's close to the waterline so there's not much pressure on it from the sea. It's easier to make a tank than to glass the fitting over.

Run the fridge drain into one of your grey water sumps and close up the hole, or just leave the seacock closed and ready for future use... maybe a watermaker inlet or return.

Why are you second guessing the naval architect and design engineers. Its the way it is for a reason.

Re: Dedicated skin fitting for fridge drain?

Just get rid of the thruhull AND the fridge . Problem gone.

New haul,

Do you think boats are built that way? They are built by people trying to make Money.
