I think this and Newhaul's comment about the risk of a spill going to the bilge is the best justification to keep it.

If I had been designing the plumbing from scratch, I would have joined it to the sink drain, which is nearby. Different hose sizes, narrow cupboard, shelves in the way, independent inline valve make that too messy now. Joining to the shower drain may have been an option, but it would be quite a job to route the hose there.

So thanks for the comments. I have decided to take the easy way and just replace it. Now that the old one is out, it's only minutes to do so as opposed to filling in the hole and whatever other plumbing is needed.

I am a retired shipwright so yes I do say that the engineers that designed the systems did it that way for a reason quick easy and a selling point. My islander tees in with the sink drain in the galley.

Why have a fridge drain at all? It is a cold air leak. I just use a sponge to clean out the bottom of my fridge after de-frosting.

My boat has a small handpump at the sink that pulls the icebox water out a pluggable drain. This keeps the sink drain nice and simple too.

Can't help myself! Fewer trip for cold beer causes less condensation. Or just do like me a hook a Gusher to the reefer.
