Cutting a Toilet

Here’s an unusual one. I’ve just bought a new Raritan electric toilet and I need to cut a 2” corner off one side at the back, so it will fit better to the curve of the hull. Neither a metal cutting disk nor a concrete disk on a die grinder makes much impression on it. I’ve also tried a sawsall with a metal blade and that doesn’t even scratch the surface. Has anyone any experience of cutting what I assume is a vitreous enamel casting?

Re: cutting a toilet

A diamond saw blade on a 4-5 " grinder. My tile saw (Home depot) is just that with a tray. A little squirt bottle to cool the blade. Might work. Might be easier to mod the interior or mount at an angle. Let us know if it breaks into a thousand pieces!

Re: cutting a toilet

My tile saw cuts porcelin tile. Should be similar hardness. It may take a lot of smaller cuts.

Re: Cutting a Toilet

You're right...it is an unusual one! Which Raritan toilet do you need to redesign?

Re: Cutting a Toilet

I sent this to Raritan...here's their reply...hope it helps:

We've used a "wet saw" (tile cutter) but you have to do it a little bit at a time, and "worry it along", sort of shave it off - you can't cut right through it all at one shot.

Re: Cutting a Toilet

What a surprise...I would have figured they would have said not to try it!
Good for them.

Re: Cutting a Toilet

Thanks for the input, but five minutes ago I answered my own question.
I decided to try a 4” Skill Turbo rim diamond disk from Lowes at $11.50. On my die grinder I cut a 3” section off the corner of the loo in about two minutes. They are porcelain castings with a vitreous enamel finish and it went through like butter, as clean as a whistle. I can now get the toilet 3” nearer the hull, giving more room in the bathroom.
It’s a Raritan Elegance and I’ve already installed one in the forward head with their Purasan Waste System, which works very well indeed, and quieter than a domestic toilet flush. When this new unit is operational in the aft bathroom I have the unenviable job of chopping up the holding tank.
