Cracked Raw Water Strainer Caps

Today I discovered that the plastic caps on my engine raw water strainers have hairline cracks and are slowly leaking. They are Groco ARG bronze strainers, but the top caps are plastic.

The cracks run along the threaded part of the cap parallel to the threads. I expect they are the result of the previous owner wrench tightening the caps rather than hand tightening.

Has anyone seen this happen before? If it's common, I'll considering replacing them with bronze caps, but they are 3x the cost of the plastic ones. However if it's just due to abuse, I'll stick with plastic and just not abuse them.

You can reinforce them with hose clamps around the threaded parts.

ciao!

Re: Cracked raw water strainer caps

I have the same strainer for my AC and never any issues. I only hand tighten till the cap bottoms out on the shoulder, as it should. Any tighter does not make it seal better, just stresses the plastic cap.

I don't think it's a common problem. I've sold a lot of Groco ARG strainers and very few replacement caps. You might give Groco a call and ask them. They are nice folks.

For service assistance/information call (410) 712-4242, and ask for Strainers Service Department.
