Composting Toilet

We've put one in, and so far it's good. It's still a toilet, but less bad than what we replaced. It wasn't cheap, but turned out to be pretty easy to properly install.

Confessions? We have a boat with two heads, so most #1 still goes in the marine-head and overboard. We're full-time cruisers, currently in the Caribbean. And we're a couple, she really pushed this change, and is pretty satisfied with how it's working out.

It's necessary to put about 1 cu. ft. of organic material in the bucket, to get the composting started. This has to be done about once a month, after the bucket is emptied. The toilet manufacturer provided a starter block of coconut fiber, marketed primarily as potting soil. But it seems silly to ship coconut fiber to the tropics. We most recently recharged with mulch wood chips from a garden supply place, but in the future I see us as gathering locally available leaves, coconut husks etc. Artichoke leaves went in, and seem good! Anyone out there have any further recommendations?
