Coleman Stirling Power Coolers

vwhammer - I'll throw a couple of questions your way, if you don't mind. I purchased one of the Colman branded Stirling Power coolers, and will be picking it up next week. My boat has a large insulated icebox, and I would like to know if I could just set the new portable unit in my icebox, and run it with the icebox lid closed?

I would not be trying to cool the icebox, of course, but would like to know if the new unit would be Ok in that somewhat confined space, or does it require a fresh air supply?

Second question, would it be possible to take the "guts" out of the portable unit, and have it cool the icebox, provided it was well insulated.
I haven't seen the "guts" yet, so i don't know if it would mount easily on the icebox wall, or if it would require some outside air, etc.

The icebox is likely 10 - 12 cubic feet.

Putting the unit in the icebox might not be a good idea.

The stirling unit is not unlike a normal refrigerator compressor or any other electric device in that it has to give off the energy it uses as heat.
In other words, if you placed the the unit in a closed icebox, the reject heat would continue to heat up the inside of the icebox until the temp inside becomes too much for the cooler to operate.

To Answer your other question, removing the "guts" can not be done without opening up the thermosiphon system and recharging once it is back in place.

You could take the FPSC (Free Piston Stirling Cooler) and associated controls and use it in a different cooling arrangement (forced air) but it would take a little engineering or a lot of trial and error to make it function flawlessly.

Also, 10 cubic feet would be more than the FPSC that is in the coleman cooler is cabable of cooling down reasonably and reliably.

We will be getting one of the SC JS05 when we get to civilization where they can be obtained.
Of course we are looking for a 'fell off the back of a truck' price.

I will be putting it in the side of our existing 'freezer' on its side. The size of the box is about 100 litres but I will section off the freezer part to be smaller and the overflow will keep the beer cool.

The freezer will have dismembered parts of large animals.... Bovine Sirloin

vwhammer - thanks for confirming what I had suspected. I may just leave the icebox lid open, or vent it, as it's an easy spot to securely leave the portable unit, out of the way. The portable will do all we need now anyway as we are just weekend cruisers. Not worth the expense, and extra power to do the whole icebox, at this time. I only need a few beer cool at once, and it's really no trouble to slip a couple more in the portable cooler, when I am grabbing a cold one from it.

I just recieved my SC-JSO5 unit from Global about 3 weeks ago.
I called to talk to Jessie Edwards and was told he no longer works there.

Yes. Jesse no longer works there. The email on the global cooling website should get to our sales manager but she is out of the country until January.

Just wanted to say that I've got an Engel MT35; picked it up from downwindmarine.com. With it on and all my LED cabin lights, I bump up into 5 amps. It's well built, quiet, and keeps things quite cold. Highly recommended.
