Bad idea?
Truly bad. Under sail you'll always have water in the cockpit.

Re: Cockpit Drain Above or Below Waterline?

Niagara 35 side decks drain out below waterline... Only reason I can guess is an aesthetic thing with a thull in the middle of the hull. I glassed up the holes and stuck em out the hull side... 2 less 1.5 in holes and valves underwater is a no brainier. In the picture you can see the hole to be glassed and new hole location.

Oh yea cockpit hulls above water line, and she's for sale

Re: Cockpit Drain Above or Below Waterline?

Mine drain a couple of inches above the waterline. The floor of the cockpit is not that far above the waterline, maybe 15" given the relatively low freeboard of the boat. I never get water back flowing into the cockpit. At most I hear a gurgle now and then when they are buried on the lee side.

I agree that most scupper are inadequate to quickly draining the cockpit, but that's really only an issue if you have a very large cockpit. The floor area of mine is about 3'x6', pretty small. If the cockpit got swamped everything above the floor cutout would drain out the back. Bottom line is that if your cockpit swamped and it was an issue for boat handling/safety then you need to find a way to drain it quick if it's not engineered to.

I have some friends who circumnavigated on a narrow-butt double ender that did not have adequate buoyancy in the stern and they would occasionally get pooped in big seas. Their solution was to inflate the dinghy in the cockpit well on long passages which kept it from filling with water. Said it worked well despite the inconvenience.

They put them below the waterline so you dont have to clean your topsides after every rain storm.

An across the board statement like this is incorrect, as there are quite a large number of factors which play into such things. Height of the cockpit sole, height of the sole when heeled at X or Y degrees. How the position of the cockpit shifts in relation to the WL due to the boat's heeling. Along with several other things.

I owned a boat configured in this manner, & never once did water flow into the cockpit from her drains. Even at extreme angles of heel, & or when heavily laden.

Mine are above the water line as I believe all IP's are.
However the cockpit sole is several feet above water line, and IP's have an excess of reserve buoyancy aft.
I have never had water come back up.
They are I believe 1.25", I just remember it being an odd size when I replaced the hoses.

Sportfisherman will have truly huge scupper drains, maybe a foot wide and 4" high, but also have a rubber flap to keep water from coming back in, get a decent wave when the transom door is open loading a big fish and you may get hundreds of gallons of water, need a way to remove it fast.

This was not an across the board statement, but directed at the owner of a LeCompte Medalist, whose cockpit is NOT several feet above the waterline.
