Thumbs up Clothes washer dryer for boaters

I was surfing the net yesterday and found a new portable washing machine that is just about ready to hit the market. I am about to start a extended trip and really hate sitting in a marina watching a washer dryer. With most boats you have peculiar surcumstances such as fresh water and power. This product uses leg power and water added by a pail. The company is taking advance orders now. Their web site is YIREGO.

Re: Clothes washer dryer for boaters

We've looked at a lot of different ways to do wash on board and think the most important part of doing wash was the spinner function. Without a high rpm spinner soap and dirt remains in the clothes and they don't really get clean.

So our solution was a mix of low tech and a more modern spin drier. The "washer" is simply 5 gallon bucket w/a modified plunger. Manually add water/soap and plunge every once in a while. Then comes the spinner. Our spinner Spin Dryer does 3200 rpm while most are only 800-1200 so it gets it out a large majority of residual dirt/soap out of the clothes. Return to bucket for 2 rinses, repeating the spin cycle between. We used ~4.5 gal. water for normal clothes and up to 6 gal. for towels.

The spinner does need 110V (400W) but isn't a big draw on the inverter and its only for a few minutes. Also once the majority of the water is removed, the clothes dry quickly.

I forgot to include clothespins! (Which, btw, also make excellent food bag clips and cost a LOT less than real ones.)

Actually the line may not be necessary...you can hang the laundry on the lifelines.

Here’s our tried and trusted clothes washer:

It really does work pretty well. Wash days we turn into the Beverly Hillbillies with shirts, pants and our unmentionables hanging off the rigging and lifelines.

BTW, the fastest way for me to become a solo sailor would be to even hint that washing clothes was my wife’s job .

Where's the button? Need button. Must have button. I feel like a laundromat as it is. I'm sure it's much different on a boat than at home...or not, depending on what you are doing.

Stick the clothes into a 5gal pail, add water & suds, hammer lid on, hoist up rig. If extra agitation is desired, run around deck, or hoist bucket when flying a kite in 40kts of breeze

Re: Clothes washer dryer for boaters

I agree with Bill O. Washing is not difficult. There are many hand-powerd and low tech devices and approaches for washing. Rinsing and getting rid of detergent/soap from laundry is difficult. I tried and tested, in my own stupid, labor-intensive ways, several 'manual' approaches, but failed with anything bigger than a small-ish towel. I just could not get rid of detergent. Plus, eco-friendly (and much preferred) air drying is an option on a nice day, but nightmare on rainy one. Nice washer/vented dryer combo for me.
