Chilled Drink System in the Refrigerator / Ice Box

I have read about a few boats that have a filtered fresh water coil go in the refrigerator/ice box to a counter top tap for chilled fresh drinking water without having to open up the box.

Anyone build anything to have chilled iced tea or powered drink tap?

Would a gal water jug filled with iced tea, and a small hose coming out the top and a small pump and tap work OK?

Working up a design for my new galley and trying to think of everything.

Bruce Bingham's book, the Sailors Sketchbook, has some similar ideas.
An absolute must-read for everything on the boat, if you are doing a fit-out.

That's a great idea Ocean Roads. I have to add that to my list also. I would think the easiest system would be a 50' roll of 1/4" copper tubing to a tap.

What about buying a PUR type filter that holds a quart or two and putting that in the bottom of the fridge, that way it's cold and filtered. Just run a short tube or buy their despencing spout for a sink.

Re: Chilled Drink System in the Refrigerator / Ice Box ?

On our previous boat, I ran a copper loop through the fridge on one wall.
It held about a quart and ran to a countertop 10" high spigot with a spring loaded lever.
We could make cold drinks instantly.

Re: Chilled Drink System in the Refrigerator / Ice Box ?

I was thinking of something similar but for, um well, , beer. Thinking I could use 1/8 keg (soda kegs) with a CO2 bottle for pressure and a length of copper going around the evaporator. Would just need a way to periodically purge the line of beer so it did not freeze when not being used. This would eliminate a lot of trash on my boat and my brother brews amazing beer in these very kegs...

Re: Chilled Drink System in the Refrigerator / Ice Box

Thanks, I have a few different boat project how to books.

I have a general idea how I will rig it up, just wondering if anyone else has done it with the drink source in the ice box.

I will have a spot in the ice box for a one gal water jug, then by the sink a simple hand pump spigot with a short length of tube connecting.

Will also have filtered water going into copper or other tubing in the box with a similar spigot set up. The filter won't be in the ice box, so it is easier to service.
