Bronze vs Brass

I just learned that brass and salt water is not a good thing below the water line. I just rebuilt a Yanmar and bronze strainer. I thought what I bought was bronze barb hose fitting but believe it to be brass. Looking at a shiny yellow fitting tells you it's brass? What are telltale signs should I look for in the brass? I am trying to replace them but am splashing next week and can't find bronze 3/4" pipe to 5/8" straight barb fitting. Suggestions??

Re: Bronze vs Brass

You can use a 1/2 fitting groco shows it the same fitting. Or use a 3/4 and a heat gun to soften the hose and fit it over the fitting.

Thank you Outlaw7! Still am curious about differences between brass vs bronze and what signs to look for as corrosion.

Ha, ha. We've just been discussing it here:

The short answer is -- "bronze" and "brass" are imprecise terms. You need to know more about what they are made of. If in doubt, replace them.
