Bottled Gas Solenoid Valve, replacement.

Mine works fine, problem is its power consumption, its rated at 15Watt and is 12volt.

I flick the switch at the panel to turn it on, turn it off when no longer required, sometimes my energy budget is tight. Its a Normally closed devise.

Does anybody know a source of a more efficient devise. Thanks

Besides the usual normally open and normally closed solenoid valves, there is also a magnetically latched solenoid valve. With that type of valve current flowing through the coil in one direction opens the valve. Once open, the current can be turned off. With current flowing in the opposite direction the valve will close. Once closed, the current can be turned off.

I have never seen one of this type of valve used in marine propane service. For one thing in a case of an electrical failure, the valve, if open, will not close.

Re: Bottled Gas Solenoid Valve, replacement.

My LPG solenoid valve drew 1.1A at 12V. I had two problems with that. It seemed to be a waste of electricity, and the coil got hot which I figured resulted in a shortened life.

I found this circuit on line.

I added the suggested parallel resistor-capacitor circuit in series with my LPG solenoid. As advertised it cut the current to 0.2 or 0.3A at 12V. I did have some trouble with the solenoid not pulling in at times. I would have to flick the switch a few times until I heard the usual thump, so I increased the capacitance to 3000uF and the solenoid now opens reliably. With the reduced current flow the solenoid coil no longer becomes hot, and I have saved 0.7A while my wife cooks a loaf of bread.

Re: Bottled Gas Solenoid Valve, replacement.

This winter in cold weather (32F in the morning outside), I found that the 3x1000uf capacitors did not provide enough kick to reliably open my rusty, old solenoid valve, so I increased the capacitance to 10,000uf.

That fixed that problem.

I also know that my LPG system is oily on the inside. The oil may be the real problem.
