"New backpacking water bottles used to have a real bad plastic taste "
DO NOT use a water bottle if the wate tastes like plastic. Send it back. You are tasting the uncured plasticizers (good stuff like vinyl chlorides) that are leaching out of a bottle that was improperly manufactured.

Got one like that with a JanSport day pack (didn't want the bottle, but it was with the pack) and when I called JanSport they apologized and said 'please throw it out, we'll send you a new one' without any hesitation or prompting.

That's one reason some folks use Nalgene (which used to be a nylon and now is a polycarbonate, IIRC) or other brand-name bottles instead of the anonymous ones from China. Which might just be made with waste transformer oil for all I know.

My water bottles each cost a nickel: One from a 20oz pepsi, the other from a 16oz Coke. Can't get the nickel deposit back if you keep the bottle.<G> FDA-approved plastic from a reputable vendor.
