Although one could make the argument the boat stayed afloat for 30 years. I am now putting a device in that potentially could block the EXIT of water should the bilge actually have a demand.

Look at the bigger picture and decide what failures are most likely; how easy would it be to recognize and react to the problem, and weigh your options.
Maybe plan to have a second
bilge pump, be sure to have valves, plugs and of course check the manual
emergency pump.
