Best Water Maker?

Looking for a high volume wm. Something around 30gph. I also want to install it myself and will be doing the work in a boat yard in Grenada or Martinique.

To start,
How big a boat
Generator on board
How big is your battery bank
How big is your alternator
Will you motor sail a lot
How many gallons of tankage
How many people on board
How much water a day do you use now
How do you want to power it
Completely manual or automatic
What is your cruising style. RTW, weekend, or anywhere in between
Do you want just drinking water or unlimited amounts or any where in between

Re: Best water maker?

It's a Lagoon 420 and I plan to get a generator after I figure the size. Probably a 4kw. I plan to motor as little as possible. Water holding is about 95 gallons. Long term, I will be doing entertaining and will need the wm. My wife and I will be living onboard, full time and want unlimited water and independent.

Any good or bad experiences will be helpful. Don't want to spend 15K and get screwed.
Also, it doesn't look that hard to install. I'm a building contractor, but told by a few to let a yard do it.

Re: Best water maker?

At 30 GPH you are looking at a AC unit, requiring a generator or a engine mounted model. Yes you can make water faster, but the cost to purchase the unit is usually significantly higher

You can get 12v models that will produce up to 18-20 gallons per hour. With the 12v (or 24v) models you have a little redundancy, if the gen set breaks down you can still operate the water maker.

Also 30 GPH is a lot of water... We have two fresh water toilets and still use less than 150 gallons a week on our boat for two people.

What are you planning on doing with a that water?

Re: Best Water Maker?

Thanks for the info. I didn't look at 12v models because some of the bad reviews. I didn't want to babysit the water maker either, as they take a lot longer to produce. I haven't seen anything that will produce 20gph. That would be ok.

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

I decided on a 30 GPH 24VDC system which Rich from CruiseRO supplied.

Even though I have a 10Kw Gen, in my opinion this DC motor provides me with the most dependable and flexible power source, given that all charge systems I have, are to support a large 24v battery bank.

Container has just been delivered, so will pick up on Tuesday
