I have been using this technique for many years on cables and hoses and it works great to keep the kinks out.

Bloody brilliant. What a great resource this forum is.

I guess it's typical of 21st century man, to try to solve problems by buying something, rather than by learning something.

So to hell with the expanding hoses -- I've now got two completely new and different ways to coil a normal hose -- the figure 8 method above, and now this.

I'm going to try to get through another season with my ordinary hose, using different coiling techniques.

Looks like the very thing for shore power cables, too.

Why do we not learn such things?

It's a cumulative effect and yes, a hose that carries the water you are going to drink or cook with should be food grade or drinking water safe.

You may die of other causes before the problems of the non food grade hose kick in but why take the chance? If it's not food grade, there are no restrictions of what it's made of or what chemicals leach out of it and into the water.

Did you mean "wrinklier" by any chance?

I've heard "kinkier" costs almost twice that much.

Good point,Zeehag, when in a marina I like to keep the hose connected to marina spigot,pressurized and on deck,however after blowing a hose while at El Cid marina in Mex. I now check the line pressure,at night when the press. is usually highest(no one washing their boats). Line pressure varies quite a bit around here.

A friend had the one with plastic ends and his only lasted a couple of months. Mine has the brass ends with a cutoff valve, and it's been over a year in use and still going strong. I store it in a hanging locker out of the sun.

I have had good luck with the ones with the plastic fittings but the new ones with the metal fittings are total garbage.

Like most folk I have given up on the bungy cord hoses. Fab idea, rubbish quality easily punctured, meant I constantly soaked the jetty, me, the dog and sometimes managed to get the water somewhere near the boat

Looked at the new "Improved X Hose" this morning but wasn't convinced especially as they want £30 for a 50ft hose.

Instead found this at £20 Mini Reel Green 11.5M Hose | The Range

The down side is that it has a bore of about 3/8th. However, it's about the size of a 15" laptop so dead easy to store away. I wait to see how long it lasts. Comes in a fetching pink or lime green.

This looks like just the ticket, maybe.

Hoses are a PITA on board. I used to carry one on a cassette/reel. This worked well, kept the hose unkinked, was not expensive, easy to use, but very bulky. I got tired of it taking up so much space in the laz.

Then I bought a French flat fabric one, in a special squeegee flat very compact reel case. When you finished using it, you retracted it into the case, running it through squeegee rollers to press the water out. It was carp. Total PITA to get it back into its box, then after only one season it sprang a leak. It cost a lot of money, too.

So last summer I threw the leaky French expensive hose in the trash, and just bought a length of regular hose pipe. It's a PITA to roll up, kinks, doesn't store well, and I'm on the verge of tossing it.

Frustrating that such a banal little thing like a hose can cause so much trouble.

So what about the X-Hose? Anyone using that?

These are available from most hardware stores in the US. We have several on board. We love them.

Garden hoses are a PITA.

Dockhead, we use those coiling methods for cable on the industrial boats, have been since before I started as a young man. When it occurred while coiling longline in commercial fishing it was called a "cable coil".

Yes - I agree - very cool hose and works perfect. I'm using this type since almost 3 years and I'm still happy.
