Aluminium Water Heater Tank - Anode?

Hello,

We have an aluminium water-heater tank which is heated by the diesel engine in our boat. It has no anode and I was thinking of installing one. But what type of metal would be a suitable anode for an aluminium tank? I know zinc is commonly used as an anode for steel, but I don't think it's suitable for aluminium. This is an area I know little about. I welcome comments.

What brand of Alum. HWT have you?

Kuma specifies: Magnesium Anode Rod #11919, or #1916 Magnesium Anode Rod w/Drain for All Models of aluminum HWT.
Seaward specifies Magnesium anodes #74556 for their (epoxy coated) aluminum HWT.

Gord,

It is the Seaward one, made in the USA. I will check out their website. Once we had the tank out, there was a sticker with a bit of information on it. Thanks for your contribution - on the money as always.
