AC Seawater Strainer Replacement filter

We recently purchased and moved on board a 1994 Manta 40. Still trying to get moved in and starting maintenance cycles for the various systems. Cleaned my ac sea water strainer filter and yesterday and realized the PO had engineered a sort of replacement. I went to West Marine and they did not have anything that looked closed to the current filter installed which I'm not sure it is the right filter.

I have searched the internet for the models that were in the Manta owners manual and could not find any useful information. I have attached several photos of the sea strainer and the users manual indicates it could be a Wilcox Crittendon Model 4000-A 18747 or Forespar model. This assumes the unti has not been replaced in the last 18 years.

Any help would be appreciated.

FYI : the filter diameter is slightly less than 4" diameter and about 4" tall

Thanks

Re: AC Seawater Strainer Replacement filter

I think I would replace the unit with a Groco Bronze one myself, maybe a bit pricey, but will last forever and it is one of those things that can sink a boat, or flood an unsinkable one, don't go cheap here.

Re: AC Seawater Strainer Replacement filter

Initially I would like to just replace the internal filter with a new one. Later I do intend to replace the whole unit with a Groco bronze one.

Thanks

Re: AC Seawater Strainer Replacement filter

I think you've got an old Vetus strainer. At least the lid looks like the kind Vetus uses.
I'd replace it with a Groco ARG series strainer.

Re: AC Seawater Strainer Replacement filter

Hopcar,
Good you reminded me, I have an OLD Groco 493/500 strainer that leaks everywhere, I know I can replace gaskets, but probably ought to replace it with a newer one that has no tie rods and gaskets?
I'll send you an email

Hi A64, Got the picture. You have a Perko strainer. I'd just clean it up, put in new gaskets and replace the basket if the basket has any extra holes in it. I replied to your email.

Wait a minute, I can sell you a few dollars worth of gaskets or?
Yes you absolutely need a brand new very expensive strainer!

Re: AC Seawater Strainer Replacement filter

I maybe using the wrong terminology. I would like to find a replacement basket for my current strainer and replace the entire strainer at a later time. Just need to replace the basket for now.

Just a shot in the dark, but maybe a pool store if you can't find the correct one, or even fashion one yourself, it's just temporary doesn't have to be pretty, just stop big stuff.
My pool pump had a plastic strainer basket that is almost identical to the SS one I have now

Re: AC Seawater Strainer Replacement filter

Jamestown distributors and others carry the Vetus, maybe they have parts too, give them a call if you confirm this is your strainer
