maybe you are not looking in the right place, since the technology has been around since 1922!

How does a gas-powered fridge actually work?

seems to me that it is being repakaged for sale in the 3rd world so unscurpulous millionaires can enslave more wage slaves by creating a demand for something that humans have managed without since the ice age

Atoll,
Thank you for the link, but I do not think I will be making a DIY fridge out of ammonia and hydrogen with an open heat source.
The original link was for a non toxic $25 doodad that worked using much lower pressures. That was what I was referring to that cannot be found......

the patent was probably bought up by du pont or electrolux so as not to interfere with the market for their nice safe cfc fridges

Seems everything old is suddenly new again. Back in the 1980's I worked in a TV studio that had a small GE refrigerator in the corner of it that used a small gas flame to operate. It had been operating for over 50 years! I asked why they used such a refrigerator and the answer was it was absolutely silent so it would not disturb any broadcast productions unlike those that use a mechanical compressor. The technology has been out there for many years.

Atoll,
You are probably right, but maybe a patent search will show up the "safe" chemicals they used.

Re: $25 Fridge Powered By Cooking Fire

Buying a ready-made unit is unlikely. Constructing one would be involved, but has potential. The big problem in third world countries isn't growing the food, it is getting it to the people before it rots. There certainly are solutions to real world problems, but difficult to implement when you're swimming against powerful tides that benefit from keeping locals divided, destitute and desperate.

I'm a big fan of open source technology and will be looking a lot closer into this kind of thing. Another area is water; specifically, dew and fog harvesting, for the folks that can't afford to buy or run a reverse osmosis watermaker. That's for another thread, though...
