Yanmar SD20 saildrive stuck in reverse

Still have not solved this issue (my friendly diesel guru is off on a delivery trip ) The port diesel on my cat got stuck in reverse as I was maneuvering onto my swing mooring. Would like to try fixing it myself. Would like any advice that could help. The engine is not new but still runs well.

Well, this sometimes happens with our 4JH (NOT a saildrive) when someone puts it into reverse while sailing. I DON'T KNOW IF THIS WILL HURT YOUR SAILDRIVE, but, we just start it in reverse and then put it into neutral.

Re: Yanmar SD20 saildrive stuck in reverse

I had a problem getting out of reverse recently. I disconnected the shifting cable from the saildrive and shifted the lever with my hand. There was no issue with the saildrive. However, I couldn't manually shift it until the cable was disconnected.

My issue was resolved when I replaced my throttle controller.

I hope that works for you.

Is it still stuck in astern or were you able to resume operations after getting it back into neutral after stopping and restarting the engine?
Here’s the easiest and most likely possibility, there’s a pin that holds the selector to the selector shaft, a really crappy bit of engineering. The pin gets loose and falls out of the hole leaving only the friction between the shaft and selector to operate the lever. I think I replaced the pin with a bolt and nut last time I did one of these so if you choose this option a bolt with a long grip length is required and a nyloc nut on the threaded portion. An easier option is a roll pin but you have to get exactly the Goldilocks right size.
