Caelestis, here's a link:

Zeehag - you "figure" wrong. Certainly in Maine, and I assume California, it's a crime to take a commercial fisherman's catch. Getting yourself tangled in their gear is not an excuse. Worse, that kind of attitude is what the fisherman expects from "yachties" (or more unprintable names). To these men and women the ocean is there workplace and it's a tough and dangerous job. We are - at best - in their way. Let's try to improve our image a bit.

Not to mention - fishermen have plenty of ways to get even with people who take their catch - like cutting a few thru-hull hoses while you're ashore at dinner.

I've been using a variation on the Shaft Shark for 30 years (currently have a Shaft Shark) in the PNW. Crab, Lobster, Shrimp pots and kelp beds have met their match. As for the comments on pulling pots; if they're not marked and in a navigation lane they're considered fair game. Most fishermen put their numbers on the float (law) and can be contacted. I been on both ends of the argument and always appreciated the call.

There is a great Australian rope/line cutter but it is sometimes difficult to use it with a feathering prop or it need s more thought on th installation. Its called a QuicKutter and is made in Perth by quickwater marine. They can also help with cutless bearings.
