Where can you have either straightened or remade a Propshaft in Grenada W.I.

Hi All,

our gearbox/couplin flange bolts on the engine decided on Sunday to fall out without any warning. Something like this never happend to us before. For what reasons ever the four bolts came undown. The result is a bent shaft inboard. Thankfully it all happend at anchor during a weekly test run.

Does anybody know where in Grenada W.I. you can have a shaft straightened or a new one made? 1.5inch (38mm)

All informations would be very appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

Is Ove still around in Carriacou? Try phoning the haulout there. If yes, he could do this easily

I had a coupling come loose once, but caught it before it came apart due to the "is that noise normal?" warning going off in my ears.
The culprit was nylok nuts on the coupling. I had replaced the stock nuts and lock washers with those when I cleaned up and painted the coupling during a haulout. Two of the bolts were in the bilge.
1) If it aint broke don't fix it.
2) Never use nylok nuts for that.

Why not? Perhaps you were using worn out lock nuts? The only reason to not use nylock nuts is if the temp can get over about 450deg.

Same question from me, why not? Has anyone else had bad experiences with nylocs? I use them a lot, and the propshaft coupling is one of the places I thought it would be a good idea.

Cheers!

I can tell you on aircraft, your not allowed to use them on anything that is subject to rotation, for that you have to use a positive locking means, almost always that means cotter pins and a drilled bolt.

Okay, that's the method we have on our propshaft nut. It certainly rotates, and it has a castle nut and cotter pin. I've just never seen that method on a propshaft coupling. It's always been lockwashers, loctite, and/or nylocs.

Should I be looking at using a different method of bolting the coupling to the gearbox output flange? Like castle nuts and cotter pins?

Cheers!

Not so sure a prop shaft can ever be brought back to "true" in a shop without costing more than new.Additionally,I could never trust that shop trueing.
Also, pulling a bent shaft may damage bearings/bushings upon removal.
Do repair correctly no matter what you're advised.
Sometimes I use a punch on threads to insure a nut doesn't walk itself loose.
I use grade 8 nuts and bolts on couplers that rotate along with some type of "Loctite".These can be drilled to receive a carter pin for never fail insurance!

All the Best
