what size packing?

havent replaced the stern gland packing on this boat yet so im wondering what size packing to use - once i measure the shaft and the case i need to know whether to use packing that is either as close as possible to the size of the gap, or smaller or larger - im guessing asclose as possible because tightening the flange should expand it diametrically as it compresses longitudinally but im only guessing - anyone know what the 'rule of thumb' is?

Yes, size to fit (match annulus).
