How many RPM can you achieve in gear?
does it over heat over time? how long?
What are the barnacles like?
Is it a fixed prop or folder?

I have Volvo sail drives and had frequent over heating problems. I installed new through hulls with sea strainers and quit trying to get cooling water through the sail drive. All my problems went away.

FWIW, I'm told that the sail drive is exactly the same unit as used by Yanmar so this is probably not just a Volvo issue.

I agree with George on installing a separate through hull for the engine and forget about the silly saildrive leg intakes. They plug up and scale quickly and are terrible to clean out.

I disagree about the Volvo and Yanmar being the same unit. Without a doubt, Yanmar has copied many of the design characteristics of the Volvo saildrive, but they are definitely not the same units.

Won't that stop water from cooling the saildrive.
I think a through hull to a "Y" fitting and picking up
the saildrive would be better.
That doesn't explan metal in the oil.
If a bearing spun won't that make the engine overheat under load.

No matter what the issue of the cooling is, change that oil imediatly and check the saildrive is OK. Ensure you have the correct oil. There should be NO metal in the oil.
cnj is correct, under load, the saildrive maybe producing excess friction due to an issue, but that may or may not be the heating problem. However, you need to fix the oil problem before you do major damage.

I have been told by Volvo that the cooling pick up in the saildrive leg is for convienience and that the imersion of the leg in water is what cools the leg not the intake. You can keel cool the engine and blank the intake off.

I agree with cooper on this. You can use a thru hull and close and plug the valve to the top of the drive. Be sure to route the cooling water from the strainer thru the cooler on the gearbox part of the saildrive then to the raw pump.

Pat, you would know more about this than me, but I don't think there is any water cooling of the gearbox on the SD10/20 saildrive cnj has.

I may be confusing it with another unit. I think it routes thru the tap on the drive flange then to a cooler tube then to the raw pump. My brain is mush this week so anything is posible.
